Tibet, a land of mysticism, has a wide variety of charms, from ancient monasteries to high, glaciated peaks which contrast against the deep blue sky, large crystal clear lakes, and plateaus. The 1000 room Potala palace, former residence of the Dalai Lama, and the huge monastic complex of Sera, Drepung, and Tashilunpo attract Buddhist practitioners as well as cultural enthusiasts. Holy Mt. Kailash is sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, who consider it to be the mythical navel of the world. Pilgrims believe that one circumambulation of this peak will remove all of the sins of a lifetime, and that 108 of them will allow them to enter Nirvana.
